Concrete Sidewalk Installation in Monterey County

Durable Pedestrian Walkways.

Concrete sidewalks provide safe pedestrian access throughout your property while handling daily traffic and weather exposure. Nexgen Paving Specialists has been installing sidewalks throughout Monterey County for over a decade, creating walkways that perform reliably for decades with minimal maintenance.

Our owner ensures every sidewalk installation gets the details right—proper width, correct drainage slopes, appropriate control joints, and smooth transitions at grade changes. These details prevent trip hazards and premature deterioration that create liability and costly repairs down the road.

Residential Sidewalks

Homeowners need sidewalks for front entry walks, backyard paths to gardens or sheds, side yard access routes, and connections to driveways or patios. We install sidewalks at appropriate widths (typically 3-4 feet for residential use), establish proper slopes for drainage, and create finishes that provide traction without being too rough for regular foot traffic.

Commercial Sidewalks

Business owners require sidewalks that handle heavy pedestrian traffic, meet ADA requirements, and hold up to Monterey County weather. We install commercial sidewalks at wider dimensions (typically 5-6 feet minimum), include ADA-compliant slopes and transitions, create durable surfaces for high-traffic areas, and coordinate with parking lots and building entrances.

Our Sidewalk Installation Process

  1. Layout and Excavation – We mark the sidewalk path, verify proper widths and clearances, then excavate to the right depth. Residential sidewalks typically need 4 inches of concrete, while commercial sidewalks often require 5-6 inches depending on expected traffic.
  2. Base Prep and Compaction – We install and compact aggregate base material (usually 4 inches), creating stable support that prevents settlement and cracking. Areas with poor soil may need additional base depth or soil stabilization.
  3. Forming and Grading – Forms create straight edges and proper elevations while establishing a slight cross-slope for drainage (typically 1-2% grade). We verify that the sidewalk slopes away from structures and creates smooth transitions at intersections with driveways or other walks.
  4. Reinforcement and Joints – Wire mesh or rebar controls cracking, while control joints cut at 4-5 foot intervals create predetermined crack locations. We also install expansion joints where sidewalks meet structures or other concrete surfaces. These details prevent random cracking and allow natural movement.
  5. Concrete Pour and Finish – We pour concrete at proper thickness, consolidate it to eliminate voids, and apply finishes based on the application. Most sidewalks get a broom finish for slip resistance, though smooth trowel finishes work for covered areas. The finish needs to provide traction in wet weather while remaining comfortable for regular walking.

ADA Compliance

Commercial sidewalks and public walkways must meet ADA requirements including maximum slopes, proper landing sizes at transitions, compliant curb ramps where needed, and detectable warning surfaces at specific locations. We handle these requirements throughout the installation, ensuring sidewalks pass inspection without complications.

Sidewalk Repairs and Replacement

Damaged sidewalk sections create liability concerns and accelerate further deterioration. We replace settled or cracked sections, remove trip hazards, repair spalling and surface damage, and blend new work with existing sidewalks. Sometimes individual sections can be replaced without redoing the entire walk, saving considerable cost.

Service Areas

We install concrete sidewalks throughout Monterey County, including Monterey, Carmel, Pacific Grove, Seaside, Marina, Salinas, and surrounding areas.
