Concrete Driveway Installation in Monterey County
Built to Last, Designed to Impress.
A concrete driveway is one of the biggest investments you’ll make in your property. Nexgen Paving Specialists has been installing driveways throughout Monterey County for over a decade, and we know what it takes to build one that performs beautifully for years to come.
Our owner treats every driveway like it’s his own. We don’t rush the base prep, we don’t skimp on thickness, and we don’t leave until the finish looks right.
Why Choose Concrete for Your Driveway?
Concrete driveways offer serious advantages over other materials. They last 30-40 years with minimal maintenance, handle heavy loads without rutting or deformation, resist oil stains better than asphalt, and provide a clean, finished look that boosts curb appeal.
The upfront cost is higher than asphalt, but the longevity and low maintenance make concrete a smart long-term investment for many Monterey County homeowners.
Residential Driveways
Most of our driveway work is for homeowners who want quality they can count on. We install new driveways for home construction, replace old, cracked driveways that have seen better days, widen existing driveways for additional parking, and extend driveways to new garages or RV pads.
Every residential project gets the same careful attention. We prep the base right, pour at the correct thickness, and finish it smooth or textured based on your preference.
Commercial Driveways
Businesses need driveways that handle delivery trucks, employee traffic, and customer vehicles without breaking down. We build commercial driveways for office buildings and medical facilities, retail centers and restaurants, warehouses and industrial properties, and multi-family residential complexes.
Commercial work means thicker concrete, heavier reinforcement, and attention to drainage that keeps water away from buildings and parking areas.
Our Driveway Installation Process
- Site Prep and Excavation – We dig out the area to the right depth, remove any soft or unstable soil, and grade everything so water drains away from your house or building. Shortcuts here cause problems later, so we take the time to do it right.
- Base and Compaction – A stable base prevents cracking and settling. We bring in aggregate base material, spread it evenly, and compact it properly with the right equipment. This step makes the difference between a driveway that lasts and one that fails.
- Forms and Reinforcement – We set forms to create clean edges and proper elevations, then place rebar or wire mesh to control cracking. The reinforcement doesn’t prevent all cracks—concrete will crack—but it keeps cracks tight and prevents major structural problems.
- Concrete Pour and Finish – We pour the concrete at proper thickness (typically 4-6 inches depending on the application), work it carefully to eliminate air pockets, and finish the surface. You can choose a smooth trowel finish, a broom finish for traction, or even decorative options like exposed aggregate or stamped patterns.
Thickness and Reinforcement
Standard residential driveways need 4 inches of concrete minimum. If you park an RV or boat, we go to 5-6 inches. Commercial driveways handling delivery trucks need 6-8 inches depending on the loads.
We reinforce every driveway with rebar or wire mesh. Some contractors skip this to save money—we don’t. Proper reinforcement controls cracking and extends the life of your driveway significantly.
Drainage Matters
Poor drainage destroys driveways. Water that pools or flows under the concrete erodes the base and causes settlement. We grade every driveway to shed water toward the street or drainage areas, never toward the house.
If your property has drainage challenges, we’ll address them during installation. Sometimes that means additional grading work or installing drain systems, but it’s worth doing right the first time.
Control Joints and Cracking
Concrete cracks—that’s just what it does as it cures and experiences temperature changes. We control where those cracks happen by cutting or tooling control joints at regular intervals. These joints create weak points where the concrete will crack predictably instead of randomly.
Some contractors skip control joints or place them poorly. We cut them at the right spacing and in logical locations that minimize their visual impact while doing their job.
Decorative Options
Plain gray concrete works fine, but many homeowners want something with more character. We offer broom finishes for texture and traction, exposed aggregate that reveals the stone in the mix, colored concrete using integral color or stains, and stamped patterns that mimic stone or brick.
Decorative concrete costs more but can transform your driveway from purely functional to a real design feature.
Concrete vs Asphalt Driveways
We install both concrete and asphalt driveways, so we’re not pushing one over the other. Here’s the honest comparison: concrete lasts longer (30-40 years vs 15-20 for asphalt), needs less maintenance, handles oil better, and looks cleaner. Asphalt costs less upfront, can be installed faster, and blends with many home styles naturally.
Your budget, timeline, and preferences all matter. We’ll help you decide what makes sense for your property.
Driveway Aprons and Approaches
The transition from street to driveway needs special attention. We pour aprons that match the street grade, handle the elevation change smoothly, and meet municipal requirements if you’re working in a public right-of-way.
Some cities have specific apron requirements or require permits for driveway work. We handle those details so your project stays compliant.
