Concrete Staining in Monterey County
Transform Your Concrete with Lasting Color.
Concrete staining provides an economical way to enhance plain gray surfaces with rich, variegated colors that won’t peel or fade like paint. Nexgen Paving Specialists has been staining concrete throughout Monterey County for over a decade, transforming driveways, patios, walkways, and interior floors into attractive features.
Our owner approaches staining projects with the same attention to prep work that drives all our concrete services. Surface preparation determines how stain penetrates and performs—we don’t skip steps to save time.
What Concrete Staining Offers
Staining penetrates concrete surfaces rather than coating them, creating translucent colors that highlight concrete’s natural texture and variations. The color becomes part of the concrete, so it won’t chip or peel like paint or coatings. Stained concrete works on new installations and existing surfaces, making it versatile for both new construction and renovation projects.
What Concrete Staining Offers
We stain driveways and garage floors, patios and pool decks, interior floors in homes and businesses, walkways and entry areas, and commercial spaces like restaurants and retail stores. Each application requires specific stain types and preparation methods based on exposure, traffic, and desired appearance.
Our Concrete Staining Process
- Surface Assessment and Cleaning – We evaluate the concrete condition to determine if it’s suitable for staining. New concrete needs adequate curing time (typically 28 days minimum). Existing concrete gets thoroughly cleaned to remove dirt, oil, sealers, and contaminants that prevent stain penetration. Power washing, grinding, or chemical stripping may be necessary depending on surface conditions.
- Surface Preparation and Masking – We repair any cracks or surface damage that would be visible after staining, etch the concrete if needed to open the pores, and mask off areas we don’t want stained. Proper prep work here determines how evenly the stain absorbs and performs long-term.
- Stain Application – We apply acid or water-based stains according to manufacturer specifications, working in sections to maintain wet edges. Acid stains react for several hours before neutralizing and cleaning. Water-based stains may require multiple coats to achieve desired color intensity. Application technique affects the final appearance, so experience matters.
- Sealing and Protection – Once staining is complete and surfaces are thoroughly cleaned, we apply concrete sealer to protect the color and surface. Sealers enhance color depth, prevent staining from spills, and make surfaces easier to clean. Exterior concrete needs UV-resistant sealers, while interior floors may use different products based on traffic and exposure.
Existing vs New Concrete
New concrete stains more predictably because it hasn’t been exposed to oils, chemicals, or weathering. Existing concrete can be stained successfully, but results vary based on age, condition, and previous treatments. Some old concrete surfaces have sealers or coatings that need removal before staining can work properly.
We assess existing concrete honestly—sometimes staining works great, sometimes resurfacing or other treatments make more sense.
Maintenance and Longevity
Stained concrete needs resealing every 2-3 years for exterior applications, longer for protected interior surfaces. The stain itself is permanent, but sealers wear down from traffic and UV exposure. Resealing protects your investment and keeps colors looking rich.
Regular cleaning with pH-neutral cleaners maintains appearance between resealing. Harsh chemicals or aggressive cleaning can damage sealers and affect color.
