Concrete Pool Deck Installation in Monterey County

Safe, Durable Pool Surrounds.

Pool decks need to handle constant water exposure, bare feet, and daily traffic without becoming slippery or deteriorating. Nexgen Paving Specialists has been installing concrete pool decks throughout Monterey County for over a decade, creating surfaces that stay safe and look great year after year.

Pool decks require specific attention—proper drainage away from the pool, slip-resistant finishes that don’t hurt bare feet, and concrete mixes that resist chemical exposure. We don’t treat these like regular patios because they’re not.

Why NexGen

Residential Pool Deck Installation

We install pool decks for new pool construction, replace deteriorated existing decks, expand deck areas for more entertaining space, and resurface worn or damaged pool surrounds. Most Monterey County homeowners want enough deck space for lounging, furniture, and safe movement around the pool—typically 4-6 feet minimum around the perimeter, wider for entertaining areas.

Our Pool Deck Installation Process

  1. Site Prep and Drainage Planning – We excavate around the pool perimeter to proper depth, establish slopes that direct water away from the pool (critical for preventing deck flooding), and coordinate with pool equipment locations. Poor drainage creates standing water problems—we plan for that upfront.
  2. Base Installation and Compaction – Pool decks need stable bases just like any concrete work. We install 4-6 inches of compacted aggregate, paying extra attention to areas near pool walls where settlement can cause cracking. The base work here matters because you can’t easily fix problems later without major disruption.
  3. Forming, Reinforcement, and Expansion Joints – We form the deck at proper elevations with gentle slopes for drainage, place wire mesh or rebar to control cracking, and install expansion joints at the pool coping and at regular intervals across larger decks. These joints let concrete expand and contract without cracking, especially important in areas with temperature swings.
  4. Concrete Pour and Slip-Resistant Finish – We pour 4-inch thick concrete using mixes appropriate for pool chemical exposure, then apply textured finishes that provide traction when wet. Options include broom finish for traditional texture, exposed aggregate for natural slip resistance, or stamped patterns with added texture. The finish needs to be slip-resistant without being rough enough to hurt bare feet—there’s a balance.
  5.

Resurfacing Existing Pool Decks

Old pool decks that are structurally sound but showing surface wear can often be resurfaced instead of replaced. We clean and prep the existing concrete, apply bonding agents, and install thin overlay materials that create new slip-resistant surfaces. This costs significantly less than full replacement when the base is still good.

If the deck has major cracking, settlement, or structural problems, replacement makes more sense than trying to cover up failed concrete.

Chemical Resistance and Durability

Pool decks get exposed to chlorine, salt, and other chemicals that can deteriorate concrete over time. We use concrete mixes designed for this exposure and apply sealers when appropriate to extend deck life. Proper finishing and curing also impact how well concrete holds up to chemicals and freeze-thaw cycles in Monterey’s climate.

Control Joints and Cracking

Concrete cracks—that’s just what it does as it cures and experiences temperature changes. We control where those cracks happen by cutting or tooling control joints at regular intervals. These joints create weak points where the concrete will crack predictably instead of randomly.

Some contractors skip control joints or place them poorly. We cut them at the right spacing and in logical locations that minimize their visual impact while doing their job.
